Days after attending a Tears for Fears concert in Las Vegas, couple Marivic Ignacio and Ray Estrada learned that their entry to the Everybody Wants To Rule The World 40th anniversary music video made the cut.

They first saw the English rock band over a decade ago when they visited the Philippines in 2010 and 2012. At the time, co-lead vocalist Curt Smith called Pinoy fans the "dog's bollocks," a British slang term for extremely good.

"It was just an enjoyable time for me," Marivic, who teaches at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, told PhilSTAR L!fe. "It was probably the best concert that I've seen to date.

Marivic had been a fan of Tears for Fears in her younger years and even subscribed to get updates about their activities and new releases. In March, she saw in their newsletter that the band was calling for entries for the 40th anniversary of Everybody Wants to Rule The World, and she jumped on the chance.

"Siyempre, aside from favorite ko sila, favorite ko pa 'yung [song]," she shared.

Ray, also a professor, chimed in, sharing, "Parang national anthem 'yan kasi noong time na 'yon in the 80s."

The song was released as part of the band's second studio album, Songs from the Big Chair, in 1985.

"Iba ang dating sa amin nung song na 'yun. And if you actually listen very closely to the lyrics, it was so relevant back then during the Cold War as it is now because it's about greed for power and corruption and the loss for environmental awareness all bundled up into one song," Marivic added.

Excited to participate in the video, Marivic enlisted the help of their youngest child, Chi Estrada, to shoot. They set up a camera in their living room and just sang their hearts out to the song.

"We were just goofing around," she shared, adding that they chose the part of the song they would dance or lip sync to, which became "I can't stand this indecision, married with a lack of vision."

Marivic added that the line resonated with her because she teaches her students to have conviction.

"We graduated in [1986]... Laman kami ng EDSA Revolution. Andun kami. Ayun 'yung shinashare namin lagi with our students. 'We did this. We stood in front of tanks, and we did all the rallies. What are you doing for your country?'"

Six months after they submitted their entry, the couple flew to Las Vegas to watch Tears for Fears in concert. Their daughter Chi even told them to watch the screens in case the band would flash the fan videos when they perform the hit song.

However, there weren't any fan clips on the Las Vegas stage.

"But apparently, it got realeased two to three days prior to the concert. So 'yun excited kami dahil nakuha kami," Marivic shared.

When they watched the music video, the couple shared that they were surprised to see little kids with their own entries.

"It kinda made it more timeless," Ray said. "If it were really just videos or clips provided by fans, they'd be old like us," he joked.

Tears for Fears started in 1981 and they've been active in the music sceneever since.

"They have a loyal following probably not because of the band or the characters in the band but because of their music," Ray told L!fe.

Apart from Everybody Wants To Rule The World, the couple recommends people to listen to the band's Sowing the Seeds, Head Over Heels, Advice to the Young At Heart, and Woman in Chains.

The members of their band are in their 60s but Marivic and Ray hope that they will get to visit the Philippines again for a show.
