LOOK: Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima collapses after Cebu quake
The Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima has collapsed following a strong quake in Cebu Tuesday night, Sept. 30.
In a Facebook post, the management asked for prayers for everyone affected by the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the area as it shared photos of its damaged facade.
In another post, it shared pictures of the Blessed Sacrament and the retablo image of Sta. Rosa, noting they were not damaged by the quake.
It asked everyone in the area to avoid touching any coral stones in the church vicinity for its restoration.
Weekday masses and Sunday masses have been cancelled until further notice, per the management.
As stated on its Facebook page, the shrine was built in 1886 and was declared in 2022 as the first archdiocesan shrine in the Philippines dedicated to St. Rose of Lima.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the quake jolted the area at around 9:59 p.m. It was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs has issued a tsunami advisory, saying a minor sea level disturbance is “expected in some coastal areas with wave heights of less than one meter above the expected ocean tides.”
The public is advised to stay away from coastal areas in Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran until further notice.
Editor's Note: Phivolcs initially recorded a magnitude 6.7 quake before it was upgraded to magnitude 6.9. This article was updated to reflect the change.
