Stunt gone wrong...

Chinese car Chery's attempt at pulling off a viral stunt successfully done by a Range Rover ended up in a mishap.

As seen in a video shared by The Straits Times on Instagram, Chery's newest SUV failed to climb through 999 steps of popular attraction "Stairway to Heaven" up the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, Central China.

Midway through the stunt, Chery's Fengyun X3L SUV struggled to make an ascent, lost its momentum, and damaged part of the guard rails as it rolled down the ancient staircase.

According to local outlet Global Times, Chery has apologized for what happened.

"The outcome has exposed our insufficient assessment of potential risks and lapses in detail control during the planning and execution of this test. In particular, we deeply reflect on the public concerns caused by choosing to conduct the test in a public scenic area," the car manufacturer's statement read.

The company emphasized that the incident didn't cause any personal injuries or damage to the natural environment, and will pay for the damages.

The large automobile maker attributed the crash to an unexpected detachment of a safety rope.

Land Rover's Range Rover made it through the stunt in 2018, in a viral advertisement dubbed the Dragon Challenge.
