Philippines to host 2029 FIVB Women's World Championship
For the first time ever, the Philippines will host the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball Women's World Championship in 2029.
FIVB President Fabio Azevedo and Brazilian volleyball legend and senator Leila Barros made the announcement before the gold medal match between Italy and Bulgaria on Sunday.
"The Women's Volleyball World Championships 2029 will be in the Philippines. Mahal ko kayo," said Barros.
Azevedo, meanwhile, said hosting the championship will be "an opportunity to again showcase not only the very best of volleyball but also the positive impact our sport has on society."
For his part, FIVB Executive Vice President and Asian Volleyball Confederation President Ramon Suzara said that the experience gained from this year's Men's World Championship will be key, noting, "we will surely do even better for the Women’s World Championship in 2029."
"We are determined to carry forward the momentum of the World Championship 2025 and channel it into something lasting for our athletes, our fans and our nation," he continued, adding that it will encourage sports-related tourism.
Suzara said that the country is ready to be "a long-term home for world-class volleyball" and is confident that the Philippines can deliver a "truly spectacular" event.
Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio thanked the FIVB and Volleyball World for its "gift" to the Philippine volleyball community.
"To host the Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2029 is a great gift for volleyball-loving Filipinos across the nation, and this long-term partnership with the FIVB and Volleyball World—a transformative empowerment program for our athletes first, and a bold push for sports tourism toward economic growth second—will not only allow our country to be at the heart of volleyball’s global growth," he said.
The Philippines' hosting of the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship wrapped up this past Sunday with Italy retaining its title. The Italian team claimed a four-set victory (25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10) over Bulgaria in the final.
