DOH releases advisory on how to avoid illness during the cold season

Amihan season has begun in the Philippines, bringing with it diseases that thrive in cold weather. To prevent the spread of such diseases, the Department of Health has released a list of precautionary measures the public may take.

According to the health agency, the cold and dry weather ushered in by Amihan may contribute to an uptick in cases of the flu, colds, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, and dry skin.

The DOH released an infographic listing symptoms of specific diseases, as well as recommended precautions to combat their spread.

The flu or common cold involves slight fever, cough, a clogged nose, and body aches. To avoid these, the DOH recommended washing hands regularly, staying home if you are experiencing symptoms, and eating fruits and vegetables.

Allergic rhinitis manifests as severe sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose exacerbated by dust or cold air. The DOH advised those with allergic rhinitis symptoms to wear a face mask if they have to go out in public, clean their surroundings, and take an antihistamine if necessary.

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is characterized by skin that is dry, itchy, and has rashes that are worsened by cold and dry weather. To help keep skin eczema-free, the DOH recommended using moisturizer every day, avoiding the use of soap with harsh chemicals, keeping baths short, and staying hydrated.

Additionally, the DOH advised the public to visit the nearest health center for more guidance and, if necessary, treatment.

Amihan season normally lasts from November to March.
