New UP MBT recruit Israel Friday dies at 19 after collapsing during team practice

University of the Philippines rookie basketball player Israel Osamudiame Friday passed away after collapsing during team practice in Diliman on Aug. 19. He was 19.

The UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development confirmed the athlete's death in a statement on Aug. 20.

After Friday collapsed, he was immediately brought to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the 19-year-old basketball player died.

"UP is in close contact with the family and extending full support during this difficult time," the UP office said, asking the public to respect the family’s privacy and allow them to grieve in the wake of the unexpected loss.

The exact cause of his death is still unknown.

His passing comes two weeks before what was supposed to be his 20th birthday on Sept. 6.

The 6'10" center hails from Abuja, Nigeria. He recently transferred from Centro Escolar University, where he competed in the Universities and Colleges Athletic League.

The UP and UAAP league communities have expressed their condolences to Friday’s loved ones following the young student-athlete’s passing.
