Bell-Kenz, DOTr advance CPR program training for public transport personnel
Following the success of its national advocacy campaign launched last year, Bell-Kenz Pharma is advancing its life-saving mission through active collaboration with the Department of Transportation, providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency response training to public transport frontliners.
Since launching Sagip CPR, Bell-Kenz has been conducting hands-on training across the country, visiting communities, schools, and local government units to equip Filipinos with the skills to act during cardiac emergencies. These efforts form part of the broader mission to create a nationwide network of trained responders capable of saving lives in critical moments.
During a coordination meeting on Jan. 29 at The Westin Manila, Bell-Kenz and the DOTr’s Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation formalized the integration of the Sagip CPR program into Oplan Biyaheng Ayos, the government’s flagship road safety initiative. The program supports Bell-Kenz’s nationwide objective of training one million Filipinos in hands-only CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators.
The partnership focuses on transport personnel deployed across busways, terminals, ports, airports, and major thoroughfares, areas where high commuter volume increases the likelihood of cardiac emergencies.
“In Bell-Kenz, we envision what we call a CPR-ready Philippines, and this is already part of our ongoing initiatives,” said Dr. Luis Raymond T. Go, medical director of Bell-Kenz Pharma.
“We believe in collaboration. Our company continues to work with agencies, schools, and government offices to push this program forward,” he added.
Anna Leah Morales, supervising transportation regulation officer representing the SAICT under Assistant Secretary Jose F. Lim IV, said cardiac-related incidents are not uncommon in public transport spaces.
“We encounter approximately two individuals per month showing symptoms of cardiac events on busways, overpasses, and terminals,” Morales shared.
She added, “Our personnel are often the first to reach passengers in distress. Equipping our teams with CPR certification is no longer just an added skill—it is a fundamental enhancement of our duty to protect.”
The first phase of the program will train the 400-strong DOTr-SAICT enforcement team, whose members operate on rotating shifts to ensure continuous public safety coverage.
Patrick Larraga, corporate branding and PR head of Bell-Kenz Pharma, said the partnership allows the Sagip CPR initiative to be embedded directly into daily travel.
“To build a nation of lifesavers, we must start where the people are,” Larraga said. “By working with the DOTr, we can bring CPR readiness to millions of commuters through the very people who serve them every day.”
The initiative will initially roll out in Metro Manila before expanding to major bus operators, terminal staff, and regional transport hubs nationwide. Bell-Kenz and the DOTr-SAICT aim to gradually scale the program to ensure wider commuter protection across the country.
