MMDA asks Luzon mall operators to provide free overnight parking in preparation for possible Super Typhoon Fung-Wong
The MMDA requested shopping mall operators across Luzon to offer free overnight parking in their facilities in anticipation of the onslaught of potential Super Typhoon Fung-Wong.
In an advisory released Nov. 7, MMDA chairman Atty. Romando S. Artes made the request to help provide the public with temporary safe parking spaces for their vehicles for the duration of the potential super typhoon.
Currently a severe tropical storm, Fung-Wong will be given the local name Uwan once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility by late Friday, Nov. 7, or early Saturday, Nov. 8.
“This measure shall take effect starting Saturday evening and shall remain until the passage of the typhoon,” Artes said in the memo.
He assured mall operators that MMDA would help disseminate their official announcements by reposting and sharing information to reach more vehicle owners.
“Your cooperation in this joint public service effort will greatly help protect lives and properties amid this severe weather event,” added Artes.
The country’s preparations for the arrival of Fung-Wong are compounded by the deadly devastation caused by Typhoon Tino, which tore through the Visayas region and exited through Palawan earlier this week.
As of Friday morning, PAGASA placed severe tropical storm Fung-Wong 1,315 km east of Eastern Visayas. Within the next 24 hours, Fung-Wong may intensify into a typhoon. By Saturday evening or Sunday morning, it may reach the super typhoon category.
According to PAGASA’s forecast, once Fung-Wong enters the Philippines, it will move west-northwestward, making landfall over the southern portion of Isabela or the northern portion of Aurora by late Sunday night, Nov. 9, or early Monday, Nov. 10.
In addition to MMDA’s preventive measures, the DILG has requested local government units to clear waterways and drainage systems, assess roads and bridges, and resupply evacuation centers.
The DILG also called on Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to focus on preemptive evacuations in high-risk areas.
The Office of Civil Defense is also on alert to assist flood-susceptible LGUs, particularly those in the Southern and Northern Luzon regions.
Residents in Batanes have boarded up their windows with shutters to prepare for the coming typhoon, reported the Region 2 office of the Philippine Information Agency.
Similar efforts to assess risks and restock relief goods have also been done in Isabela.
