Have you ever asked your teenage sibling any question, like for the time, and they randomly drop a "6-7" while shrugging? You've encountered another Gen Alpha slang, which joins the likes of "skibidi," "sigma," and rizz."

Pronounced "six seven," the term made the rounds on TikTok as early as January, but it has generated buzz anew in September, particularly among the kids and teens in school.

In recent videos, kids in classrooms are seen saying "6-7" after their teachers mention the numbers.

Where did it come from?

The term "6-7" is accompanied by a specific hand gesture, meant as a playful response or expression, when answering questions involving numbers, like “How tall are you?" or “What time is it?” Gen Alpha just drops the slang casually, making it part of their everyday language.

On TikTok, user Mr. Lindsay, a teacher who translates terms used by his students, explained that "6-7" makes reference to the song Doot Doot by Skrill, which includes the song's chorus lyric: "The way that switch brrt, I know he dyin' (Get him) 6-7, I just bipped right on the highway (Damn)."

The song is mostly used in basketball content, especially edits featuring Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball. Interestingly, the Gen Z basketball star is 6 feet 7 inches tall.

One user, @mario.create, said that the first creator to make a meme out of "6-7" is probably Taylen "TK" Kinney, a high school basketball player in the Overtime Elite league. Kinney would always drop a "6-7" when he would be interviewed before or after games.

Basketball stars like NBA's LaMelo Ball, former player Shaquille O'Neal, and WNBA's Paige Bueckers, as well as the NFL, have mentioned "6-7" in press conferences and TikToks, and more.

Mr. Lindsay also said that “there is no real meaning” to the meme and that it's simply just a number that Gen Alpha finds fun to say.

Another user, @pierochi, gave his idea on why Gen Alpha says it.

"Everyone that's in on it is just trying to get others to ask them questions to where they'd be able to answer '6-7' or some sort of variation on that," he said.

Pierochi also echoed Mr. Lindsay, saying, "There's literally no meaning to it."
