Kim Kardashian opens up about 'final straws' that led to divorce from Kanye West

Kim Kardashian got candid about what led to her divorce from rapper Kanye West.

On the Oct. 15 episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, the reality star revealed the toxic side of her decade-long relationship with the Donda artist.

Kardashian recalled the early stages of their relationship, saying she was "always learning" with the "larger than life" West. They began dating in 2012 and tied the knot two years later in 2014 after welcoming their first child together, North, in 2013.

Their relationship had its share of ups and downs and resulted in Kardashian filing for divorce in February 2021, which would be finalized in November 2022.

Looking back, the SKIMS co-founder shared that she likely didn't "pay attention" to signs that their relationship was changing.

"When someone has their first mental break, you know, you want to be super supportive and you want to like help figure that out and you want to really get into that with them and be there for them," she said.

"But [when] someone isn't willing to make changes that I think will be super healthy and beneficial, it makes it really hard to continue on in a relationship that can be toxic."

Kardashian added that having kids together makes it "harder to leave than stay." She shares children North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm with the rapper. However, she eventually knew that it was time to walk away.

”Once my mental health starts to get affected, and then I can’t parent the way that I need to and I can’t be present and focused, then there’s got to be one of us that can. And I had to save myself in order to be a better mom for everyone. And I think, like, when everyone’s older, they’ll be able to understand it and see that all," she said.

The final straw, Kardashian shared, was when West spoke out against the socialite's family and when she started not to feel safe emotionally and financially anymore.

"I would come home and we'd have like five Lamborghinis, and I'd come home and they'd all be gone if he was in an episode," she shared. West opened up about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2019. "I'd be like, 'Oh, wait. Where's all our cars? Like my new car?' And it would be like, oh, he gave them away to all of his friends."

“I didn’t know what you’re going to get when you wake up, and that’s a really unsettling feeling,” she said.

Kardashian also admitted that co-parenting with West is "not easy," but she does not restrict his access to their four kids. She revealed that West has not checked in on the children in “a couple of months."

In May, Kardashian finished law school after six years. (with reports from Kat Lazarra)
