Here's everything Conan O'Brien did during his trip to the Philippines
Conan O’Brien's trip to the Philippines may have been brief, but he left as an honorary "Manilenyo."
ICYMI, the former late-night host visited the country on Oct. 13 to film for the upcoming third season of his travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go. His staff writer and content producer Jose Arroyo took the time to detail everything they did during his stay in charming doodles.
"Day one in Manila: Conan shot in Rizal Park today and in the crowded market in Quiapo, just outside the Church of the Black Nazarene. He ended the day eating halo-halo like a true 'Manilenyo.' He took dozens of selfies with such smart polite fans," Arroyo wrote.
In another entry dated Oct. 15, the content producer shared that they went to Quezon City for a shoot and experienced the Philippines' infamous traffic scene.
"That's where our superfan Charles runs his family-owned candy factory (Philip's). The traffic in manila makes LA's freeways look like the Bonneville Salt Flats, which gave me time to draw Conan in the van checking his phone," Arroyo said.
For their third day, O'Brien got the chance to ride a bamboo bike near Fort Santiago and tried balut for the first time at Plaza Roma.
The TV host posted a photo of himself holding a balut while Arroyo, in a doctor's getup, puts a stethoscope against the dish.
"My personal physician Dr. Arroyo gives my balut a thorough exam," he captioned.
"At the Manila Hotel, he channeled the spirit of Gen. Douglas McArthur. Everywhere we filmed, Conan's fans showed up to say hi. 'Thank you' in Tagalog is 'Salamat,' and I'm very 'Salamat-ful' for everyone we met," Arroyo said.
O'Brien shared on his Instagram that McArthur was his childhood Halloween costume for seven years in a row.
At some point during the trip, the comedian also received a P20 bill with his face on it instead of former president Manuel L. Quezon.
"A fan is distributing these bills in the Philippines. He's being arrested as we speak," O'Brien joked.
Arroyo also gave behind-the-scenes details on Conan's guest appearance on the TV series Sanggang-Dikit FR, which stars Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado. The writer said the comedian played a "rich, evil creep" that required an "evil creep moustache."
During shooting, O'Brien got to interact with martial arts actor Mustafa who is also a fan.
On Oct. 18, the comedian's crew headed to Tanauan City where they met superfan Tricia and her husband Patrick. The two decided to temporarily appoint Conan as a bellhop, which Arroyo joked became their "worst hiring decision ever."
Wrapping up on the experience, Arroyo posted pictures of the souvenirs they got, including a tote bag a cartoon of O'Brien saying "I love balut!"
"A special thanks to Charles, Mustafa, Tricia, who inspired us to visit and to the hundreds of fans who found us on the streets, in the hotel lobby, and at the airport. (Salamat = Thank you)," Arroyo said.
Conan's travel series follows him visiting fans he previously spoke with virtually through his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan.
The series premiered in 2024, with the first season featuring trips to Norway, Argentina, Thailand, and Ireland. The second season, released in May 2025, saw the former late-night talk show host traveling to Spain, New Zealand, and Austria.
Known for hosting Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, the comedian gained international recognition for his wit and distinctive comedic style.
