Priscilla Meirelles: ‘Exercise helped me fight depression and boost my overall well-being’
Priscilla Meirelles, the Brazilian beauty queen who has made the Philippines her home, shares her insights on well-being.
THE PHILIPPINE STAR: You’ve chronicled your fitness journey on social media. How has it impacted your overall well-being?
PRISCILLA MEIRELLES: I believe it is our responsibility to inspire others positively. Many people look up to me, facing the same challenges I do, feeling helpless or ready to give up. My intention is to inspire them, reassuring them they are not alone and [that] if I can overcome, so can they. This is both a social responsibility and a personal calling. To live to inspire is to live a fulfilling life.
Exercising has been such a game-changer for me when it comes to fighting off those feelings of depression and boosting my overall well-being, both physically and mentally. I like to call the gym my “therapist.”
says Priscilla Meirelles.
Whenever life gets tough—whether it’s dealing with difficult people, frustrating timing, or just plain bad luck—I know I can count on that workout to lift my spirits. I hit the gym and embrace the feel-good hormones that my body releases through every workout. That’s how I bounce back and keep getting stronger.
Recently, I’ve added running marathons to my routine, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! It pushes me not just physically, but mentally. It’s such a great way to train my mind to stay positive and focused—definitely a winning mindset! Plus, it’s become such a fun little challenge I can’t get enough of.
Beyond physical fitness, what does “well-being” mean to you?
For me, well-being is all about discovering that perfect place where my heart feels at ease. In the past, I often let situations and other people guide my journey. But recently, I’ve been focusing more on what truly makes me happy!
What is “Priscilla’s Diet” or “Earth’s Diet”?
Throughout my fitness journey, I’ve experimented with all sorts of diets, and one thing I’ve learned is that most aren’t sustainable in the long run. So, I’ve decided to embrace a simpler approach that goes back to what our ancestors ate. I call it the “Earth Diet” or “Priscilla’s Diet.” This means I focus on eating foods that come naturally from the ground—things that don’t require a long list of ingredients to prepare. I enjoy a lot of animal protein, too, and I’ve found this way of eating works wonders for me. I’ve managed to shed 40 pounds in just five months, all while feeling strong, energized, and looking good. I steer clear of processed foods, sugar, and dairy. Instead, I fill my plate with sweet potatoes, lots of eggs, various meats, fish, chicken, and fresh fruits.
I also enjoy herbal, caffeine-free teas throughout the day with a bit of stevia for sweetness instead of coffee. I do allow myself a cheat day once a week—just one meal to indulge! By combining this eating plan with weight training and some great cardio, I truly believe you’ll see amazing results and feel younger in no time. Remember, food was meant to be our medicine, not something that makes us sick. Let’s nourish our bodies the right way.
What Brazilian wellness practices do you follow, and what have you integrated from the Philippines?
I absolutely love how both Brazil and the Philippines have such vibrant cultures around health and wellness. Back in Brazil, going to the gym and staying active [were] big part[s] of my life. I started focusing on fitness and my diet as a teenager, and I’ve kept that going even after moving to the Philippines. Here, I’ve discovered a unique love for massage, especially hilot and ventosa cupping.
Incorporating these techniques into my routine has truly uplifted my well-being. They’ve worked wonders for not just my physical relaxation but also my mental health. I find massage therapy to be such a fantastic way to manage stress and tackle various physical issues. It’s amazing how much we can benefit from caring for our bodies and minds.
As a mother, how do you teach your daughter about resilience, self-care, and mental health?
As a mom, I truly believe in keeping the lines of communication wide open with my daughter. It’s so important for her to know that she can share anything she feels or needs to talk about. I think the foundation of any strong relationship is all about communication, and it’s through that connection that we build trust. They really go hand in hand.
I also think it’s crucial for us parents to set a good example because kids naturally pick up on our behaviors, manners, and lifestyles. I strive to be present in her life and support her as she navigates the ups and downs. We have plenty of heart-to-heart talks about life, coping with challenges, relationships, expectations, and the importance of being kind to ourselves and others. I want her to know it’s perfectly okay to not feel okay sometimes, and no matter what, she can always count on me. Plus, I love reminding her that happiness is something we choose every day.
You “choose to be happy.” What does this choice entail for you?
I practice gratitude every day, and it’s truly what makes my happiness possible. Whenever I encounter something that tries to throw me off balance or gets me a little upset, I make it a point to find something to be thankful for. It could be something as simple as having a car to drive, enjoying a beautiful sunset, or even just the fact that I’m alive. I take a moment to express my thanks for all these little blessings, and I do it with a grateful heart. This positive mindset really helps me navigate tough times, and it never fails! There’s always something to appreciate in life, no matter the circumstances.
How do you use your platform as a public figure to inspire and empower other women?
I truly believe that social media has incredible power, and I choose to use it to inspire and uplift as many women as I can by leading through example. Being a public figure means my life is a little bit of an open book, and I want to share that we all face challenges. It’s so important for us to understand that self-love isn’t selfish! Prioritizing our health and happiness can transform not just our lives but also the lives of our kids, families, and everyone who looks to us for strength and joy. As a woman, I’ve learned that loving ourselves is the best way to spread love to others. Together, we can make a positive impact on everyone around us.
What’s next for you in terms of your career and personal growth?
I’m currently on an exciting journey of rebranding myself as a host and actress. When it comes to personal growth, I’m all about embracing the amazing possibilities life has to offer. I’m ready to explore, take on new challenges, and dive headfirst into new experiences. Each adversity I’ve faced has helped shape the woman I am today, and I take so much pride in that. I see myself as bold yet gentle, brave yet resilient, kind yet wise while still being adventurous. I truly believe I have a voice, and I want to use it to inspire and connect with as many hearts as I can.
