Kim Chiu admits to 'honest mistake' after mispronouncing name of IV of Spades

Kapamilya star Kim Chiu has addressed the online backlash she received for mispronouncing the name of the funk-rock band IV of Spades.

On the Sept. 10 episode of It's Showtime, the band performed their song Aura, their first release in five years following their hiatus.

Kim congratulated IV of Spades, but instead of reading "IV" as the Roman numeral for the number four, she pronounced it as "ai-vee."

The mistake quickly made the rounds on X with a video clip of the moment garnering 2.2 million views and mixed reactions.

"Ilang beses na kasing nabanggit na [four] of spades name ng group nila, ininterview pa sila diyan nila Karylle, Jugs, and others, pero 'i' 'v' of spades pa rin sinabi ni Kim nung binasa niya na 'yung nasa [teleprompter]," one user commented.

"Isn't it their responsibility to be fully aware of who their guests are? If they exercised more caution, situations like this could have been avoided," another said.

Others also came to her defense.

"Kahit ako nagkakamali din sa pagbasa. Just saying," one user replied.

"Ang daming host na nagkakamali sa spiels nila pero when it comes kay Kim pinpununa agad," another added.

Kim addresses backlash

The widespread attention prompted Kim to respond. She admitted it was an "honest mistake" and acknowledged that she was not familiar with the band.

"Let me just clear this out. Bilang mahilig ata tong acct na to sa 'clout.' Honest mistake, ['di ko] talaga sila kilala. Kung naitama ko 'yung pangalan nila, may magbabago ba?" she said.

Chiu then drew parallels between the criticism she received and the larger issues facing the Philippines, particularly concerning corruption.

"Mababalik ba satin yung ninakaw na tax natin? I think there are many more problems in PH now than this," she added.

Kim also recalled moments when her last name would be misspelled as "Chui." "Never ko naman pinapalaki or ginagawang issue. Ang hirap sa iba, instead of lifting each other up, we pull one another down. Crab mentality," she said.

The 35-year-old Linlang star also expressed her frustration with what she described as a lack of collective effort towards national progress.

"[Kaya walang] pinagbago ang Pilipinas. Sana, mas piliin na lang natin magtulungan para sa ikauunlad ng lahat."

She then urged her critics to focus their energy on more pressing matters, stating, "Mas kailangan ng bansa natin ang boses mo doon, sa tunay na laban, sa tunay na problema, sa tunay na kalaban. Pare-pareho tayong lumaban sa buhay ng patas. Be considerate. Be kind."

Social media users react

The Kapamilya star's explanation, however, did not sit well with everyone, sparking further debate online.

"Sabi mo nga 'honest mistake'... and mali ka naman [talaga], tapos ibabaling mo ['yung] dulo ng sagot mo sa ibang issue. Sorry lang will do... tama ka na 'di mo naman kilala lahat," one user commented.

Another user expressed disappointment, stating, "Mahal ka namin Kim pero you should have reviewed your list of guests. If I [was] your boss in the production, I [could not] accept you telling me that you don't know them (insulto yun sa part ng artist), and it was an honest mistake. That's your job in the first place, and you have to be good at it. Nagsorry ka na lang sana teh."

Some users also defended Kim, acknowledging her honesty and highlighting the misplaced focus of the criticism.

One user pointed out how the actress is among the top celebrity taxpayers in Quezon City. "Masyadong misplaced and inyong pamba-bash," they said.

Kim is among the several celebrities who took to social media to denounce the alleged corruption in flood control projects and the alleged lavish lifestyles of government officials' children.

The corruption issue involving billions of pesos has been a hot topic in the news and on social media for weeks now. Adding insult to the injury was how internet users noticed several children of politicians and contractors, branding them as "nepo babies," who flex their designer clothing and fly to different countries in seemingly unapologetic fashion—and even vlogging about their comforts.

Other celebrities who spoke up on the matter include Anne Curtis, Nadine Lustre, Vice Ganda, Bianca Gonzales, Pokwang, Matteo Guidicelli, and Karen Davila, among others.
