French documentary about the Philippines nominated at 2025 International Emmy Awards
A French documentary about the Philippines has been nominated at the International Emmy Awards under the Current Affairs category.
The award-winning body announced that Philippines: Diving for Gold, produced by Keyi Productions and Arte G.E.I.E, will be competing against other investigative programs that tackle urgent social and political issues around the world.
"The Philippines has vast deposits of gold. But much of it is mined by children. They alone are slender enough to dive deep into self-dug tunnels, through swamps or down to the seabed. The highly dangerous undertaking puts their lives at risk," the film's synopsis read.
Philippines: Diving for Gold puts viewers into the shoes of a father in Camarines Norte whose 13-year-old son Hato, 15-year-old nephew Androw, and other family members are striving to make a living by mining for minerals such as gold. It also shows another family in Leyte with a 14-year-old son diving in the ocean to mine gold.
Other nominees in the Current Affairs category include Dispatch: Kill Zone: Inside Gaza from the UK, Repórter Record Investigação: Desaparecidos Forçados (Enforced Disappearances) from Brazil, and Walk the Line from Singapore.
The films will be judged by a global panel of judges, including GMA Network’s Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and Executive Vice President for GMA Pictures, Nessa Valdellon.
Philippines: Diving for Gold is available to watch on Arte's YouTube channel until Dec. 19, 2026.
The 53rd International Emmy Awards is scheduled to take place on Nov. 24 in New York City.
