Selena Gomez opened up about how she is struggling with arthritis brought about by lupus.

In her guest appearance on Amy Poehler's podcast, the actress and entrepreneur shared how her lupus has led to a side effect that has started affecting her work on her own brand, Rare Beauty.

"I have arthritis in my fingers, and that’s due to my lupus. So, I remember before the brand, I was trying to open a water bottle, and it hurt really bad before I was on the right medication," Selena said.

"And we somehow inherently made the products easy to open, and then we realized, wait—they kind of have to be that way," she added.

This has led to an eye-opening insight about how accessibility should be built into her brand.

"We started to make every product with the intention of [working for] anybody who [has] dexterity problems," she said.

Rare Beauty recently launched a new perfume in August, which has no cap. Instead, users can toggle a button to unlock the bottle and release the scent.

"I know that might seem like a little thing, but it’s really not because it’s actually so helpful for anyone at any age to be able to use the products. And that’s why we want to make them easy and accessible, because it’s important to me and it always [has] been," Selena said.

"So, even down to our fragrance, the pump is very easy for me to use," she added.

The 30-year-old has been vocal about her experience with lupus—an autoimmune disease—since her diagnosis in 2014. As a result of the illness, Selena underwent a kidney transplant in 2017.

In her 2022 documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, the superstar further detailed her struggle with lupus.

"I haven't felt it since I was younger," a crying Selena said in the documentary. "In the morning when I wake up, I immediately start crying because it just hurts, like, everything."

However, she refuses to be weighed down by her health battles. As she states in the film, her focus remains on embracing and loving herself fully.

"I found having a relationship with bipolar and myself, it's going to be there," Selena said.

"I'm just making it my friend now. I think I needed to go through that to be who I am and I am going to keep going through it, but I'm really happy. I'm at peace. I'm angry. I'm sad. I'm competent. I'm full of doubt. I'm a work in progress. I am enough. I am Selena," she added.
